Don’t Lose Your Day Job: DJ Hero Saves Jay-Z?!

Clark Kent says: Last night the good folks at Guitar Hero invited me out to see Jay-Z’s MySpace performance at Blender Theater. It being my first time there, you can only imagine the hijinks I got into when I walked through the door.

After getting beat in Madden by Mighty Casey in a miraculous comeback, I hopped on the train and made my way to the show. It felt like it took forever so I started jotting down thoughts for my next “Single In The City” blog and by the time I got halfway through, I was there.

I get to the door and show the RSVP slip and when I get in – the scene is familiar to a video game nerd like me. 42” Samsung TV’s, drinks and DJ Hero blaring out of the speakers. But Hov is on the bill, so you know the fans are coming out to see him, too. Shout-out to everyone there, by the way… Tito, Gerry, The Scully Bros., EMitts, Panama, DJ Boy Wonda, Kwasi, Tara and Double-O (anybody else I missed, I was under the influence… lol) – and thanks to Jordan, Ryh-Ming and Aaron over at Guitar Hero for letting me see the show.

After a lengthy wait, we get up and there’s Hov standing with his swagger on a hundred thousand million. Folks had told me that this was his practice before his show at the Garden – and they were right. He pulled out the hits, but had no special guest appearances. The vibe just wasn’t there. He even knew it:

Jay-Z: You, homeboy, sitting on the steps. This ain’t a poetry reading. You f—ed my vibe up. All these great people came here to party.

That was true. Whoever the lazy guy was definitely blew my high as the crowd was like an on and off switch with almost every song played. Again – that’s not saying Jay didn’t come with it – he just worked with what was offered. Hov was trying to work with the crowd, told a few jokes, repped Brooklyn and performed songs off of ‘The Blueprint 3′. I don’t know, y’all… Something was just in the hair. I thought Bleek tripped over a plug or something that fucked up the show something major, but according to Bossip it was the FDNY:

Close to half an hour later, the music abruptly stopped while Jay-Z and Memphis Bleek were performing “You, Me, Him and Her.” Then fire alarms sounded and FDNY officials entered the venue. The Brooklyn rapper didn’t appear happy by the delay as he wiped his face amid chants of “Hova.”

Fortunately, the officials exited after just minutes.

And so did the rest of the energy. The rest of it was kind of ebb and flow for the rest of the night, Jay ended with “Encore,” but was probably already in the back of his Maybach on his way to the 40/40 where he was hosting later on that evening. All in all, DJ Hero fans, you have a game where you’ll be able to play it around drunk friends and don’t have to worry about anyone thinking your party is a “poetry reading.”

For those who didn’t get a chance to be there, check out Jay doing his thing below:
