The Good, The Bad & The Ugly: Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 Review
Clark Kent says: Let me tell you this… When the first MUA came out I didn’t have the PS3 yet, let alone the game, but I spent hours trying to beat it at my friend’s crib who had both. Now that I’ve gotten to play part two does it still give my spidey-senses a tingle? Find out after the jump…
GOOD: Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 is as much of a RPG as it is NOT a button-masher. The qualities of both are meshed in this continuing hybrid saga of Stan Lee’s best and brightest caught up in a story unlike its predecessor. Two plot lines exist as you are forced to join Iron Man’s pro-registration side or Captain America’s anti-registration branch after events of immense proportions force the government to regulate the acts of your favorite superheros (much like how the government is trying to regulate the acts of your favorite bloggers/writers). As with the first game, bosses in the sequel are classic comic-book staples and no matter how hard the battle may be, you’ll be given incentive to trudge on (Hint: A best friend will become your worst – and hardest – foe in MUA-2). Everything is a means to something. Conversations with other characters in NPC mode contribute attribute points that can go for trophies, unlockable art, audio and costumes make the extras worthwhile. Plus, the “not-so-secret” civil war between Marvel’s legendary heroes and villains will make this button-masher one to play and replay to see both sides to the story.
BAD: The camera… the camera… the camera… The top-down rear camera limits movement, so you’ll find yourself going around in circles trying to find those extra goodies. Also, the removal of the D-pad “playcalling” styled system sucks. “Playcalling” is where you could send out your other characters to fight or be defensive when in battle. In its place is the combo/tandem action. By holding down the LT button – L1 for PS3 users – you can “fuse” with a character of your choosing and together you can put together a chain of attacks that also contribute to trophies and unlockable stuff if you go in. The different level settings make it so that you can go from never able to die (in a war, really?) to fighting through some pretty tough circumstances. The fusions can get repetitive as the only difference is the animation with the characters you choose to use. The action is typically the same.
UGLY: Venom’s face is for starters… But all in all, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 is a beautiful display in merging the best of both worlds (button-mashing and RPG) and presenting it to the masses in style. Everyone from Wolverine on down to Hank Pym get their collective shine on and show how much depth there is to the Marvel Universe. As you go along the story and unlock characters and other goodies – make sure you check this game out and if you’re online – give me a ring. Wolverine and me cut through folks like a hot knife through butter!
