The Good, The Bad & The Ugly: ‘Precious’ Movie Review

precious2Clark Kent says: I didn’t get a chance to see this movie yet, but definitely didn’t want to leave you hanging. I’ve heard a lot of interesting things about ‘Precious’. Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey signed off on this movie, but guest blogger, Rashaun Hall let’s you know after the jump if this movie was as “precious” as billed.

Rashaun Hall says: ‘Precious,’ the eagerly anticipated film adaptation of Push: A Novel By Sapphire, opens wide this weekend [Nov. 13th]. And while Disney’s holiday fare and MiJac are dominating the box office, it will be interesting to see if this African-American drama about an abused teenage girl living in 1980s Harlem will hit home with moviegoers – even with the support of Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry.

precious_film_poster2GOOD: If you didn’t read Push, it’s basically the story of Clareece “Precious” Jones, an abused teen trying to find her place in a world of abuse, pregnancy, incest, welfare and all-around chaos. The film definitely lives up to the buzz – for the most part. Both Mo’Nique and newcomer Gabourey Sidibe offer riveting performances that will likely have them bringing home award show hardware in early 2010. Director Lee Daniels also pulls no punches with his gritty scenery, raw flashbacks and overall melancholy soundtrack.

BAD: My only real issue with the film was its casting of the secondary characters. I get Paula Patton as the teacher that cares (BTW, Patton is still ridiculously beautiful sans make-up), but Mariah Carey as the social worker and Lenny Kravitz as the male nurse – can you say “stunt casting”? I assume these decisions were made to put butts in the seats and that casting occurred prior to Oprah and Tyler co-signing the flick but it is still a bit off-putting, especially the first time a mustached Mariah appears on the screen.

Precious-push-movie-02UGLY: I won’t spoil the ending of ‘Precious,’ but if you have seen/love movies like ‘The Color Purple’ and any other movie of this sort, then you know how this one goes. I will say that this movie will likely make you put your problems into proper perspective.

Rashaun Hall Says: Support black moviemakers and go see ‘Precious’… and take a friend who is down on his or her luck. It will make them feel a lot better about their own lives.

Clark Kent says: Make sure you go and check out Rashaun’s blog by clicking here! If you haven’t seen the trailer to ‘Precious’ yet, peep it below:
