The Good, The Bad & The Ugly: ‘Why Did I Get Married, Too?’ Review

Clark Kent says: Has Tyler Perry done it again? His latest movie shows Janet Jackson like you’ve never seen before! You can read more about this review after the jump.
GOOD: Tyler Perry has a gift of creating dramatic scenarios that captivate the audience’s imagination. Continuing the issues that began from 2007′s ‘Why Did I Get Married?’ — the couples have grown in ways that add onto the melodrama. Even before they all even touch down in the beautiful island of Eleuthra, hilarity ensues in the form of the volcanic Angela (Tasha Smith). Still convinced her flirtatious and recently employed husband, Marcus (Michael Jai White) is cheating her antics alone make the film pop in choice moments. Earning an MVP for ‘Why Did I Get Married Too?’ has to be Janet Jackson. Her performance literally shatters whatever idea you had about her skills as an actress and leaves you transfixed on her dilemma. Jill Scott powerhouses her way through the movie providing some equally stirring emotional moments. Tyler Perry also wins points for including Image Comics’ graphic novel ‘Douglas Fredericks and the House of They‘. His film aims to create discussions about the different type of relationships we have and ‘Why Did I Get Married Too?’ accomplishes that feat.
BAD: Unfortunately, Tyler Perry fails to accomplish his main feat of providing a wholly entertaining experience. The sequel doesn’t take too many risks from the original. Offering solace in familiarity the themes of love and trust come off as stale and awkward. Sheila (Jill Scott) and her new husband Troy get a shock when ex-hubby Mike (Richard T. Jones) jumps back into the picture. Angela’s over-the-top antics reinforce the stereotypes that Tyler Perry champions in his other films. You won’t find anything new here in ‘Why Did I Get Married Too?’ The drama is uneven in parts where simple logic should have been placed. Tyler Perry also gets lazy with his pen as the dialogue comes off as forceful even in the most romantic scenes.
UGLY: ‘Why Did I Get Married Too?’ is formulaic and driven by themes that both the audience and Tyler Perry find comfort in. Dramatically uneven there a whole portions within the third act that will have you scratching your head. The film will start a discussion no matter how you feel about the it as the cast does their job with Janet Jackson and Jill Scott earning major kudos. The script’s highlighted values of open communication, self-giving love, and forgiveness are welcomed amidst the insane drama that ‘Why Did I Get Married Too?’ Subtlety is not Tyler Perry’s strong suit and it shows in spades.
Clark Kent says: In other words — Skip It! Just didn’t do it for me and I wouldn’t want you to do it to yourself (see: waste money). Don’t take my word for it — share your thoughts and check out the trailer yourself below:
