James Franco could turn out his highest-profile directorial effort with an adaptation of Stephen Elliott’s memoir The Adderall Diaries: A Memoir of Moods, Masochism and Murder, which he would also write and produce.

Franco could star in the film, as well.

Variety says the actor has optioned the book, but doesn’t detail any timeframe. If the option has just been taken then Franco has to get to work writing; I wouldn’t expect to hear much about this for at least six months.

The most likely way that could change is if, upon the film’s release, heat for Franco’s performance in 127 Hours lights a fire under this one. If that’s the case — say an outfit like Focus or Fox Searchlight becomes interested — then we might get more news quickly.

In the spring of 2007, a brilliant computer programmer named Hans Reiser stands accused of murdering his estranged wife, Nina. Despite a mountain of circumstantial evidence against him, he proclaims his innocence. The case takes a twist when Nina’s former lover, and Hans’s former best friend, Sean Sturgeon, confesses to eight unrelated murders that no one has ever heard of.

At the time of Sturgeon’s confession, Stephen Elliot is paralyzed by writer’s block, in the thrall of Adderall dependency, and despondent over the state of his romantic life. But he is fascinated by Sturgeon, whose path he has often crossed in San Francisco’s underground S&M scene. What kind of person, he wonders, confesses to a murder he likely did not commit? One answer is, perhaps, a man like Elliott’s own father.

Clark Kent says: Two of my favorite funny people have teamed up for ‘Date Night’. While personally I didn’t have a date to accompany me for this flick — the more important question is — was it funny? Let’s discuss after the jump.

GOOD: The King and Queen of Sitcom TV are undisputed champions — Steve Carell and Tina Fey. Their work on ‘The Office’ and ’30 Rock’ have garnered them a ton of awards and in ‘Date Night’ their pairing is a Hollywood wet dream come true. The duo take their comedic traits and apply them to screenwriter Josh Klausner’s script and pepper the storyline with quips and antics that get laughs almost on cue. Fey and Carell can effortlessly convey the ups and downs of their marriage as Phil and Claire Foster. Director Shawn Levy (‘Night at the Museum‘) heaps on the action sequences and let’s oddball-ness run amuck as an always-shirtless Mark Wahlberg plays a security expert and James Franco and Mila Kunis (my crush) play a skeevy criminal couple. J.B. Smoove helps to add onto the hysterics as a cabbie in one scene that definitely needed his touch.

BAD: Unfortunately ‘Date Night’ comes off as unpretentious and unambitious as Shawn Levy never really asks Steve and Tina to venture outside of their comfort zones. Specifically there’s a pole-dancing scene that the duo appears in and on-screen the Fosters appear to be the same uptight nerds that they started out as in the beginning of the flick. These two sharp talents should have inspired the screenwriters to do more than car chases and a generic mobster plot-line. Levy leads the movie into a dead halt whenever the attention moves from the Steve Carell and Tina Fey to the film’s more distracting scenes.

UGLY: ‘Date Night’ is ultimately a testament to under-utilizing talent. The cast is undoubtedly a strong one with the run-time pretty feasible. While Mark Wahlberg can do no wrong, Steve Carell and Tina Fey aren’t really allowed to break out in their roles. ‘Date Night’ clicks whenever they are allowed to fully engage one another. It’s probably no surprise that both are able to relate to each other so well. Carell has been married in real life since 1995 to actor Nancy Walls Carell and Fey has been a loving wife to composer/producer Jeff Richmond since 2001. They bring to life in the film those experiences that infuses the easy camaraderie that flows effortlessly on-screen. Shawn Levy’s track record is known in Hollywood as one who tarnishes the reputations of America’s comedy elite (see: ‘The Pink Panther‘ and ‘Night at the Museum’) — but he cannot stop the funniness of Carell and Fey.

Right now in the world of TV comedy, Tina Fey and Steve Carell are the ‘Prom Queen and King’, and with all that popularity comes the price of raised expectations. The couples comedy Date Night, starring Fey and Carell as a married couple looking to spice up their romance, was bound to be scrutinized.

So now that the first trailer has arrived (via Apple), reactions have been mixed. But there’s hope for this film, if for no other reason than the fact that Fey and Carell are some of the most talented comedians working right now (although I’m still holding out for Fey to start writing some more movies of her own).

Date Night was directed by Shawn Levy (of Night at The Museum fame) and written by Josh Klausner, who only has a couple of credits as a writer (mainly for Shrek films). But Klausner has also worked with the Farrelly brothers, so he must know his way around a joke, right? There’s a strong supporting cast of funny folks like James Franco, Mila Kunis, Jason Segel, and Kristen Wiig.

Clark Kent says: Neither Carrell or Fey have lost their comedy magic, but while this film stands unrated, it could end up being a 40-Year-Old Virgin sleeper hit, right? You be the judge. Peep the trailer below!

Justin Theroux will play the villain in the Universal Pictures comedy Your Highness, being directed by David Gordon Green, says The Hollywood Reporter.VIA CS:

Theroux joins Danny McBride, James Franco, Natalie Portman and Zooey Deschanel in the film, which centers on an arrogant, lazy prince (McBride) who must complete a quest to save his father’s kingdom. Theroux will play Leezar, an evil wizard with a bejeweled magical staff who kidnaps a princess (Deschanel).

The film, which is shooting in Ireland, was written by Ben Best and McBride, who also is producing.

Theroux co-wrote the screenplay for Tropic Thunder and penned the script for Iron Man 2.
