Find out what got me to act so uncouth after the jump.

Before we even get into it I have to break down what a B.U.M. bitch is so you can properly feel offended or not.

B.U.M. Bitch [noun] – means “barely understanding money,” bitch.

Now that we got that out the way I have a confession to make — I am a former B.U.M. nigra. I’ve been making money since I was a kid but I’ve never been hailed as no Miley Cyrus or nothing. Once I got the axe from the former 9-to-5 I had to really tighten up on my budget.

But just because I was put in a position to pinch pennies didn’t mean that I could get some lovin’, right? That’s what I thought when I met this young lady at Fort Greene Park. Our conversation was witty, not too snarky, she enjoyed asking questions — which is no secret a turn-on of mine, and her hair was next level soft. We agreed that our first date would be a surprise courtesy of me.

So I dug into my bag of magic tricks and came up with a few things to behold. Picture if you will starting off with attending one of the longest running independent comedy shows, then a Stoli open bar (I don’t drink anymore), ending the night with a Michael Jackson Memorial Sing-Along. Now imagine paying free.99 for it! Over the course of the date — we talked about funny stuff, why Will Smith has been replaced by a clone, and she kept raving about her new Louis purse she just doled out dollars for.

Two-thirds of the way through the date and she keeps sending subliminals about how cheap the date was. She asks sarcastically while taking strong sips of her Stoli, “How long you been living here?” I answered and she responded as if on cue, “…and this was the best you could come up with?” *Dead* I had no come-back. I tell her of a nice Italian restaurant in the LES and she’s game. We’re eating and enjoying the ambiance of the night when she picks up her phone to take a phone call. Whomever she was talking to she was letting all her in-the-house business out in-the-streets. She became immediately disgruntled about her gas being cut off. “How am I supposed to take a shower?” she barked to the person on the other end of the phone. “How am I supposed to cook?” I imagine that it was her roommate letting her know about ConEd’s dastardly tactics when it comes to non-payment of bills.

Angrily she hangs up the phone and Smart Aleck (yours truly) just had to ask the question. “Everything alright?” She shot that one down as if we’re in an aerial dog-fight. Then she begins a fifteen minute rant about ConEd singling her out, elaborating how they’re pricks for not giving her an extension, and how she always seems to be in a bad position as soon as she gets into a positive one. Again — yours truly had to pop the bubble on this broad’s dream-like landscape she seemed to be traveling on. I asked her carefully, “With all these issues with ConEd and overhearing your position — would you sacrifice that Louis to be able to cook or take a warm shower?”

Shawty looked me up and down as if I had just schmacked her momma. “You know how much I paid for this?” I looked at her. Then looked at the purse. Should have made a joke about a horse. I’m finding it harder to have genuine conversations amongst all this Internet double-talk so I dropped the conversation and tried to keep the night as positive as possible. In the end all I ended up with was a heighten curiosity for all things free, a partially full stomach, and a bill for $89 — that joke about a horse, umm, it was about her.

Ladies — Does being financially aware count when dating? Sudaara White — the precious pen(wo)man from the East Coast has some interesting tales to tell after the jump.

St. John’s University alum Sudaara White is a wonderful wildflower always injecting passion into the projects she’s involved in. A Martha’s Vineyard original this proponent of powerful prose has found her works published all over the Internets from HipHopDX to AllHipHop to here at Don’t Lose Your Day Job. Quick witted, armed with a voracious appetite for knowledge, and not bad on the eyes — Sudaara White is this week’s VIRGINIA SLIM. The Massachusetts mamacita talks about challenging Condoleezza Rice to a race, knowing J. Cole before the Roc Nation hype, and answers if monogamy is natural for our sexy species. Enjoy!

DLYDJ: You’ve penned a few stories here for the site — what inspired you to get involved in the wonderful world of writing?

SW: Ever since I was in grade school I’ve enjoyed creative writing and making up stories about pretty much anything. It was free range creativity and I felt like I could really let loose with my imagination. I would write tales, read them out loud, and the kids in my class would gather around to listen. They all enjoyed the stories. I was also really into magazines. I remember being at a friend’s house, reading her magazines so intensely that she got bored with me. I was 16 when I really decided that I wanted to try it out and be a writer myself. Yet it wasn’t until my senior year of college that I thought it was a profession I really wanted to get involved with. Trying to create a lane for myself was an obstacle itself. The other ones I have encountered have been based on my own doing. It’s never enough no matter how much you’ve accomplished and with that you begin to create doubts in your head. I’ve learned also that you have to be careful who you trust in this industry and who you trust. How much you reveal of yourself to people is important because not everyone has your best interests at heart.

DLYDJ: If everything you can imagine has the possibility to become real — what are four things that you’d create into existence and why?

SW: I’d come up with a few things:

Get a work visa and earn a job at a hip French magazine for a year. From there I’d make a way to become a travel editor and write for National Geographic.

After my tour of duty as traveling editor ends I’d like to come back to the States and host for CNN.

I’d engage in a trip to space. The perspective I would have after seeing planet Earth would be indescribable.

Getting a bit creative I would love to come across an unlimited credit card that I’d never have to pay back. Free stuff is always awesome.

DLYDJ: As cool as you are, savoir-faire and all, the question I have for you is kind of personal. When did you lose your video game virginity?

SW: Oh, wow! [Laughs] I remember when the Nintendo first came out and everyone had ‘Super Mario Brothers‘ and my mother and my cousin would play it. I’d just watch it. I was only about three or four-years-old. I liked it, but wasn’t too into it. Later on I would play ‘Duck Hunt‘ and stuff like that. It wasn’t really until Super Nintendo that I got into video games. I would sit on that thing and play ‘Mario Cart‘ with my cousin 24/7 and ‘Donkey Kong‘ with Dixie, ‘Mario All Stars,’ and ‘Mario Paint‘. Basically Mario was my bestie growing up. I loved that Super NES… still have it! I’m actually thinking about hooking it up again and playing it when I have some down time. I must say that an ex-boyfriend of mine tried to get me to play Xbox 360, PS3, and all that, but I get nauseous, so I can only handle the 2-D stuff. Anything above and beyond that and I’m just off. [Laughs] I can get down on some racing though. 3-D or not. And I’ll get down on some ‘Rock Band‘ and ‘DJ Hero‘ too.

DLYDJ: If you could challenge anyone to a race who would you challenge and what racing course would you drive on?

SW: If I could I would race Condoleezza Rice because even though people hate on her. She’s a black woman who clearly did her thing. Rocking out in the White house with Bush and Colin Powell. I think she’s an ill black woman, but I’m cooler, so beating her would amp up my ego. We could race somewhere random like an extreme race track in New Mexico on the desert or something just because.

DLYDJ: Massachusetts has a rich history from Roxbury to your native place in Martha’s Vineyard. What are six faux pas that are absolutely no-no’s for those who live in the Vineyard?

SW: Ooh, that’s a really good question, Kev! I got some good ones for you.

Renting a moped is definitely not cute. I’ve seen people get hit and die or hurt really bad by riding them. Most of the natives in Martha’s Vineyard frown upon that. They also slow down traffic and the people who ride them look lame.

Walking around town with just a bikini top on is also a no-no. It’s not Miami. You can do that in or around the beach, obviously, but elsewhere you just look tacky.

Trying to imitate a Boston or New England accent. That’s really annoying.

Assuming that everyone from the island is rich.

Going nude on the beach will be a huge mistake with terrible consequences.

Pronouncing the town names wrong is also a no-no.

I’m also part Native American and my mother used to make me go to cultural events. There’s land in the Vineyard that’s a part of the nude beach. In order to get to some of our clay cliffs we have to go around the nude beach. I’ve been there, yes, but I have never walked around nude. I’m not opposed to it. It’s just not my thing really.

DLYDJ: You’re a St. John’s University alum blessed to attend the school with some pretty interesting characters — one of them being J. Cole. Did you and him ever have any chance encounters?

SW: [Laughs] Yeah, I know him as Jermaine. I used to see him around the yard. We’d always say, “Hey,” to one another and were friendly. Fast forward a few years and I’m interviewing him for a hip-hop website. It’s funny because I had no idea what he was up to aside from going to school. I’m proud of him. Since doing the interview I’ve seen him around, we’ve chatted it up a bit, and he’s really a nice guy who I respect. He’s been doing his thing. St. John’s, as a whole, has some talent for sure, and I always knew it… now the world can see it! I have some hidden musical talents of my own. I can read music, play the piano, and the flute. I was in the band when I was in high school. I can sing a note or two, too, but I have no desire to pursue singing at all. I dance ballet and I used to want to be a professional ballerina until I was about 14.

DLYDJ: There are those who have an interesting opinion when the subject of conversation turns to sex. On the site we’ve talked about polygamy and the pros and cons of free love. Do you believe that monogamy is unnatural for our sexy species?

SW: I think being monogamous is a doable thing. The problem arises when people are never satisfied. Humans always want something more. Once we get it, we find ways to make it wrong, or create problems, so we can have a reason to complain and move on. I’ve seen couples who have been together for years, faithfully, and are happy. It is attainable. I just don’t know if it is for everyone to have. It depends on how you treat a relationship and what you base it on. There are so many things that go into being with a person that not enough people take the time out to consider them. If more people would actually take the time to figure themselves out and then go into something then we’d probably see less problems and more loving. To answer your question — monogamy is real and it exists. Yet it just may not be a natural thing for most to bear during these “interesting” times. I could go on but I have to digress… A man must know his woman through and through. Three ways one can know that their woman is being unfaithful are:

Disinterested.

Arguments for no reason at all.

No longer stimulated emotionally or physically.

Women are more emotional creatures than physical honestly. Men are emotional but I believe they live for the flesh a bit more. If there is no stimulation a woman will turn to someone who will do the job right. Whereas if the sex is good then she’ll probably stay with the man for that one reason because you’re safe, she knows the person, and knows what to expect.

I’ll give you an extra one, Kev. If a woman hides her phone, locks it, or whatever — that’s a huge thing. Means she’s hiding something. Oh, if she’s going somewhere and doesn’t invite you, where’s she going is right into the arms of another man. Trust me!

Ladies know him simply as Leon. Cutting his teeth in roles such as ‘Band of the Hand‘, ‘Colors,’ and ‘The Women of Brewster Place,’ Leon made a splash with audiences all over in 1991′s ‘The Five Heartbeats‘. Since then the New York born actor has went on to become a fixture in what’s subtly known as “black Hollywood” — but that’s never phased the talented thespian. Now starring alongside Billy Dee Williams and Monica Calhoun on ‘Diary of a Single Mom‘ — the actor puts his skills in the capable hands of Robert Townsend to tell the ongoing saga of baby mama drama. Leon — still a ladie’s man — sits down and talks about working with the Meteor Man, shares his thoughts on Mo’Nique’s Oscar win, and explains how it was to work with Billy Dee Williams.

DLYDJ: In ‘Diary of a Single Mom‘, you get a chance to re-team up with Billy Dee Williams. After working with him on the play ‘Three Ways to Get a Husband‘ — did you learn any lessons from the master of smooth?

Leon: It was an incredible experience to just be able to be in the presence of such a legend. We didn’t get a chance to really have too many scenes together on the show and in the play, but it was a pleasure to just see him in the flesh. You really get a feel for what type of person he is and you can see how he conducts himself on and off the set. I got to be around a seasoned vet [laughs]. If you’re any man of color who’s been fortunately to be a leading man in a movie, you know you owe a part of your style to Billy Dee. There are a lot of black men in Hollywood who respect the man. He’s a true movie star.

DLYDJ: Since you brought up Black Hollywood — what do you think it would take to make the community at 92% happy?

Leon: I don’t really believe that anyone in this life can be 100% happy. Hell, probably not even 92% [laughs]. But for Hollywood, not just “black” Hollywood, to survive — we must create more of a synergy with one another. We cannot afford to be separate anymore like we have been for so long. The entertainment community as a whole need to pool our talents and resources together to create the stories. It’d be wonderful if someone would step up to the plate. We need to have a prominent actor or director come on-board and go out within the industry to create movement through all the mediums. The masses will then see where the culture is going. Right now, no one is trying to tell our stories but us, and working with Robert Townsend is great. I’ve learned a lot from just watching him work and seeing his direction of me during the course of filming for ‘Diary of a Single Mom‘. He let me do what I felt was right and from time to time he’d look at the scene with his director’s eye and critique accordingly. If we were able to get it together on a level like that — with some solidarity — we’d be able to move powerfully. Working with Robert was a blessing and I hope to have the opportunity to continue to work with him in the future.

DLYDJ: After Mo’Nique won an Oscar do you see any doors opening up for other black folks?

Leon: Congratulations to Mo’Nique and her accomplishments — first and foremost. But let me say that I don’t know how many doors can be open in such a short time of winning such a prestigious award. I want to see more Hollywood stories like hers though. We need more stories that are dominate and are great performances that audiences truly enjoy starring folks that are right for the role. The problem we’ve always had in this business is that we don’t always go to the most reliable sources to tell these stories. Mo’Nique may not have been what you thought when you looked at the cast, but she was great and her performance was rewarded by the Academy. That’s why we go to the movies — as fans and audiences — to be swept away to the point that we’re into it and in tune to the movie. You can’t tell me that the scene from ‘Precious‘ where she’s telling the story — it’s incredible. You can’t deny that. Hopefully Hollywood and the public can take notice to how things are progressing.

DLYDJ: ‘Diary of a Single Mom‘ tells tales that are very reflective of what’s going on in our world today. I wanted to touch upon what you think our children these days learn in school now that the Internet is so popular?

Leon: These days the Internet is as much a tool as it is a distraction. In school I’d hope that it is one that is used to benefit a child’s education and used as a tool by their teachers. It opens the world up for them to see places that I could have only imagined as a kid. You can hop on the video chat and talk to people the world over. Parents should actually sit down with their kids and sit in on a class. You’ll see how the Internet is used as a great teaching tool.

DLYDJ: Funny story — I had the “Apollo” scene from ‘The Five Heartbeats‘ on tape — and used to try and sing it to girls in my class. I was wondering since Hollywood remakes going on in Hollywood — how would you feel if someone re-did such a classic flick?

Leon: Honestly, man… Imitation is the most sincerest form of flattery. If the people wanna see it, then the people wanna see it.

When you stand 5’10″ you’d think that it’d be easy for you to stand out… especially in New York. For Willingboro, New Jersey’s own Ediomi Abasi — the task is almost as daunting as Dwight Howard nailing a free throw. Perseverance is the Rutgers University alum’s middle name and marketing is her game. As a specialist for Consultants 2 Go, Ms. Abasi gives food for thought to Fortune 500 and mid-size businesses. Now, as this week’s VIRGINIA SLIM, Ediomi Abasi talks about losing her video game virginity, conversing for a cure for sickle cell, and consults our readers on some business pitfalls to avoid. Enjoy!

DLYDJ: Can you talk about what inspired you to make the decision to step in front of the camera?

EA: Three things inspired me: Dreams. Fear. Courage. It was my dream to always become a model. It was an aspiration I had within since I can remember. I always posed in front of the camera and loved to take pictures just for fun. In my dreams I saw my name in flashing lights, in magazines, on stage the whole nine! It is the reason I’m on this Earth so I had to pursue it. The fear that I had growing up was the thinking of when you’re young and you don’t think you’re pretty — what happens to your dream of wanting to be a model? Growing up my internal struggle with self-confidence and being “different” was scary.

I live with a disease called Sickle Cell which is a red-blood cell disorder that can cause pain episodes called crises due to lack of oxygen in the blood. I went through trying times as a younging. Experiences that were devastating and life-altering. Things that shake you up mentally, physically and spiritually. Being hospitalized at the age of six and seven to chronic pain all over your body makes you question who you are and where you come from. You ask yourself why…?! Why do I deserve to go through such hardship? Why do I have to stay inside and not play sports in school? Why? You feel as though Most High has turned his care and love away from you for all the wrong reasons. Growing up I thought bad things happen to you when you’re bad but I was good. I loved my family, played nice with my friends, and got good grades. So I didn’t understand and my lack of understanding resonated within as fear.

I learned to channel my insecurities and use them as fuel to be a go-getter. My fear turns into an empowering statement: “I have no idea what this is about but I know my life is precious so I’m going to give it the best that I can.” That brings me to the story about courage. Actually talking about this stuff out loud is humbling to me because it is real to hear my own story. Often I take it for granted and forget all that I’ve been through. It gives me the courage to say, “I’m a liver of life; not a survivor. I haven’t beaten the odds; I live them.” To do that you have to be courageous. My life in front of the camera has been a long time coming and at times I feel I don’t do it for myself. I do it for those out there that can’t and won’t; those that are scared and broken. I know what it’s like to be there but I will never let that manifest within. I’m thankful for who I am and all experiences. I’m shy, I’m insecure, and introverted, but I’m also bold, daring, and open to share. In front of the camera is my dream, my fear, and my courage all wrapped up into one.

DLYDJ: The days of talking about sickle cell doesn’t seem as prominent these days as it once was. How does your non-profit organization, Converse 4 A Cure (C4C), seek to raise awareness about the disease? What have been some obstacles you’ve faced in trying to gain the public’s attention?

EA: We raise awareness to the public by making knowledge cool, fun, and innovative! Sickle Cell Disease was un-rightfully dubbed as the “forgotten disease” for reasons that I do not understand. It affects so many that it should be discussed and knowledge should be widely distributed. C4C exists to reach those uninformed and misinformed about sickle cell through innovative forums using fashion, art, and entertainment. As I dig deeper within myself and the community I’m learning that the disease is not an attractive one to have because there are so many myths and negative views about the subject.

It’s a misunderstood and underrated disease to the human community. Since conception the organization has been well-received and been on-time with our approach and message. C4C is not at the point of applying for large funding yet so we haven’t faced any obstacles in that arena but one of the major obstacles that exists today is the lack of camaraderie. Those who have the disease at times are ashamed of it, they don’t understand it and don’t speak about it. We may be pigeon-holed because of our experiences but the more we converse the easier our experiences become. They are all unique and there is no one right way to care for us. My organization is all about keeping the message and approach fresh and the facts accurate. I want all affected by it to feel welcome, listened to, and appreciated. My organization uses art because life is art and healing comes through expression of one’s self… whether that means painting your story or being vocal. We must converse on ways to find a cure while having fun searching for it.

DLYDJ: Another thing that may be discussed could be deemed a personal matter. When did you lose your video game virginity?

EA: NINTENDO!!!! I remember when my parents bought my other siblings and I our first gaming console. It was the first Nintendo box that came with ‘Super Mario Bros.’ and ‘Duck Hunt’. We also had a racing game but I can’t remember the name of it. I remember distinctively all of us gathering in the middle of our empty living room floor and took turns competing against each other in our Olympics game. The one that came with the Power Pad, you know?! [Laughs] We’d be all out of breath and cheat by using our hands instead of our feet so that we could go faster and get a higher score. It was great!!! After that we’d switch and play ‘Duck Hunt’. I’d always lose but boy were those good times [laughs]! We still play it to this day, too. You have to hit the Nintendo to stop it from freezing and blow on the cartridge, but it’s still in good condition.

DLYDJ: The Digital Age seems directly tied into the rise of the entrepreneur. What are your thoughts on the Internet’s influence in business? Also, what advice do you have for young upstarts looking to come into their own?

EA: Leverage, leverage, LEVERAGE!! In other words: Utilize everything but be attached to nothing. In other, other words: Use the Internet in ways that yield positive growth. Google your ideas, study your competitors, share ideas, discuss pertinent topics, and strive to reach those across the globe. However you must still be able to operate without the Internet. It may sound unfathomable but phones and in-person meetings are just as important. I say that because technology can desensitize you. If all you use is the Internet you’ll forget how to hold a person-to-person conversation with your fellow human beings.

Building relationships are important and human contact is vital for a healthy life. We need each other more and more these days. To my aspiring entrepreneurs/upstarts: If you want to be seen you must have an online presence. Be it a blog, website, Twitter, Facebook — you must be there and leverage the Internet to meet you and your customer’s needs. If you’re not online then you have no credibility. Start a blog, share your ideas, keep it professional, unique and newsworthy. Don’t chase the “cool” be true to yourself and the “cool” will find you!

DLYDJ: What are some things future businesspersons of America should try to avoid in order to stay successful?

EA: That’s a hard questions to answer because nowadays it is so easy to be successful. We have so many opportunities and resources at our fingertips that we have no choice but to prosper. Shoot… I can testify that a horrible business experience can be turned into a great success story if you learn your lesson! I would say to the future upstarts: Never throw your pearls to the swine. Your business idea is unique and precious. Don’t let others in too soon. Have your trusted circle of confidants/mentors that you bounce ideas off of hear your stuff but don’t sell yourself short by telling your idea to people you don’t know because they may treat your gold like dirt. I’m all about making money, too. I plan to be a millionaire by 30 — however don’t let money be your main focus. Do what you love and the money will come. Leverage the market in regards to making the right financial decisions in regards to investing and creating multiple streams of income.

DLYDJ: To change the subject: What are five things that every man should know in order to keep a relationship with a woman on the up-and-up?

EA: Five ways that a man can keep his relationship with his lady on the up-and-up are as follows:

Communication. Lover’s understand each others love language. Though you may be in a relationship together you may not communicate the same way. Add to that some quality time, gift giving, talking, doing acts of kindness are all vehicles of communication. Find hers and make sure your partner can give you what you need in return.

Have fun with her! Take her to new and exciting levels of awesomeness. The world is big you and the lady in your life should explore it together.

Be understanding. Strive to overstand her. Just try. You don’t have to get everything, but the effort is appreciated and goes a long way.

Stay true to who you are in the within. Don’t wear your personality on the outside! In this day and age it’s cool to floss and wear all this glitz around our necks and on our wrists but when you have nothing inside because you’re too busy decorating yourself; it’s a no-no. It’s definitely not a bad thing to have the bling but ensure you are balanced and can hold a cool conversation. Period.

Keep it real. Don’t play games and be considerate of her feelings! We are emotional beings so we tend to invest in you too soon at times when you are not on the same page. Tell her what the deal is. No games!

DLYDJ: You’re able to work a job, do a non-profit, and get your career off the ground. What is next for you and how do you see yourself accomplishing your goals?

EA: [Laughs] Next… I concur Jupiter! Ultimately, only the Most High can truly know what’s next for me. I’m just a vessel. Seriously though, up next for me is obtaining my 501c3 status for my non-profit organization. I’m so close I can taste it. After that I’ll be joining a couple of more modeling agencies so that I can market myself and my abilities and be “out there” in the mix.

Clark Kent says: Wanna know more about Ediomi Abasi? The Ritsumeikan University graduate sought to further her scope and knowledge of self by challenging herself abroad. Coming to the States to attend Rutgers University and Pratt Institute, the holder of a Master’s in Arts and Cultural Management made Brooklyn her own, and hooked up with one of the borough’s best deejays, J. Period. This week’s VIRGINIA SLIM, and Director of New Media at Lyrics To Go talks about the international love of hip-hop, explains the Rocksmith lifestyle, and challenges J. Period to a DJ Hero battle. Enjoy!

DLYDJ: When did you first realize that you wanted to get into the entertainment industry?

AT: When I first moved to the United States as a student, studying arts and cultural management, I was involved with various things on the side, such as stage manager, tour promoter, etc. always dedicated to performing arts, especially music. The last place before I totally soaked myself into the entertainment industry was this non-profit organization that promoted cross cultural understanding through hip-hop. I was the Education and Community Outreach Director there. Through going to different events, meeting different people, connecting and collaborating, I realized that this is something that I get excited and thrilled to do. I don’t know if there are things in this life that are universally understood about the culture, but what I see within it, I respect. Those things are unity and individuality. Within the language of hip-hop, you can go anywhere in the world, and you can connect with the people there, even if you don’t understand the language. They respect one’s individual style, too.

DLYDJ: When the culture touched down in Japan in the 80′s deejays weren’t really on the radio. Eventually folks like DJ Krush made a killing in the clubs. Now that we’re 30 years plus with the music — how do you feel about the relationship between Japanese and American artists?

AT: I see that Japanese deejays and American artists — who have been around from the early-to-late 80′s through till the 90′s and onward have a strong and solid relationship with each other. Lots of Japanese deejays who’ve been around have booked artists in Japan back then, or collaborated with them when they came to Japan, and still keep that relationship strong. When those deejays come to the United States, American artists will show so much love to them, by doing songs and shows together, and in general, maintain that long lasting relationship. Even now I see a lot of situations where deejays in Japan actually bring the American artists overseas to perform and put on a show.

DLYDJ: Who are some of your favorite artists and how do they influence your creativity and style?

AT: Mos Def, Erykah Badu, Dead Prez, Les Nubians, Pharoahe Monch, The Roots… Wow… The list goes on. All of these artists have such a distinct style. Whether it’s with their music, or their fashion, or in their personal level– they’ve been around for a while but they don’t change in a good way. They have message and they have followers across the border… They are still them wherever they go. Very charismatic and I really appreciate them. My creativity and style follows an ethos I share with those artists I admire; To be you. You feel me?

DLYDJ: This next question may be a little bit personal but… When did you lose your video game virginity?

AT: [Laughs] Wow… I don’t even remember! ‘Super Mario‘ maybe?! The game was really addictive I recall. I wanted to beat my brother all the time. You really just wanted to continue to get better at playing it and keep winning. If I could challenge anyone to a game — I’d have to say that the game would be ‘DJ Hero‘ and my opponent would be J. Period.

DLYDJ: Speaking of J. Period — one of my favorite tapes is the one he did called — ‘Best of Lauryn Hill: Fire & Water’. What’s it like working with him as the Director of Marketing and Promotions?

AT: It’s been three years now. I met him in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, about four years ago, and we’ve been friends since then. Before I started working with him, he was more of a friend, and sometimes a mentor to me. So I must say that first and foremost — we are friends. The same goes with his manager and his publicist. We’re a proactive, small but strong team “executing” big things. It is great working there because you can see the results in what you do. We can always improve so what we do can become better and better. J. Period is very business minded and a hard worker. We sometimes stay up all night going back and forth over the phone just so that we could release the project in the morning. By partnering with him I’ve been able to build strong relationships with dope artists. Each of us has our own things going on — projects, the company, other work, et cetera — so everyone brings something to the table.

DLYDJ: Mickey Factz wore the Rocksmith “Go Big” tee in his “Paradise” video. For those uninitiated about the clothing line — what makes Rocksmith stand out amongst others?

AT: First I must say that Rocksmith is not just about being a clothing line, it’s also about being a lifestyle. The line is influenced by the culture, hip-hop culture, so Rocksmith can sense what people within the culture would want to wear, what artists want to wear it, and how to rock it cuz they are in the culture themselves. Hence we’ve been getting calls from stylist and artists to wear Rocksmith gear at TV shows, music videos, live shows, etc. Artists and industry folks come to our office for photo shoots or just to chill quite often.

DLYDJ: New York has tons of free shows, concerts, and events that really make people lose their mind and enjoy being in Gotham City. If you could put together your own dream bill — who would be on it, where would it be, and… can I get a backstage pass [laughs]…?

AT: [Laughs] I’m not feeling shows that have a lot of people on the bill. It’s too much. Rather, I would like to have very few of my favorite artists perform at my future cozy sound-proofed living room or studio with drinks and food…every week. It would be a private invitation-only event. Yes, Kev… you can come through, bring a bottle!

Clark Kent says: Wanna know more about Aiko Tanaka? More after the jump.

I’m a product of a single parent household. Even though my father was visible and within earshot he wasn’t always available nor did he always teach me those lessons that life taught me immediately. The trend of being in a fatherless home is something of family tradition. The majority of cousins I know who have kids all have fallen into that stigma of being the baby’s something or other. That, in addition to being with another person entirely, leaves me to wonder how that other person feels about the situation.

You come into the relationship understanding of the person’s dilemma but unless your last name is Smith and you’re bringing in eight figures on those checks you can best believe there’s a measure of drama involved. One in particular has an unusual case where she has forsaken men after the birth of her son Jordan and found love in the arms of a woman. Yeah, yeah… I thought it was interesting too.

She would tell me that a woman knows how to love a woman better than a man. What does one do when said woman gives more drama than any man ever would? It seemed to drive my cousin crazy. She would call cursing out the phone before she’d even say hello. “Kev, I can’t stand this mutha^%$#!.” Jokingly I thought she was talking about the father of her child but she set me straight when she said, “No. Lesley’s always complaining when she knows Tuesdays and Thursdays are the times when me and He-Who-Shall-Remain-Nameless get together to read and spend time with Jordan.”

The plan was initiated to help the kid know his parents even if they couldn’t stand each other. I thought it was the least they could do, but I guess Lesley wasn’t having it. “She’s sabotaging me,” my cousin complained. Wondering how she told me about the time when after coming back to the store Lesley had slickfully started a fight that my cousin jumped right into. Cuz-o is hot tempered so you’re not going to get away with calling her much, let alone out of her name, and when Lesley did so in accusing my cousin of still having feelings for her child’s father — the house almost exploded from their verbal warfare.

The drama left my cousin so drained she called and rescheduled her appointment with her baby’s daddy. As if almost on cue Lesley wanted to make up and I guess there is some truth to girl-on-girl action because cuz-o was singing her praises even though the incident happened a few days ago. But as the saying goes — what goes up, must come down — and they were at it again.

Fighting and frolicking were the seasons of their union and never once did the girlfriend ever raise any stink towards the child’s father — she saved all her ammo for the lil’ one. It sickened me to learn that my cousin’s girlfriend would constantly say snide remarks to the lil’ one and my cousin would allow it — never raising a finger.

All the hype about gay relationships and bullying that are being blasted on the news and my cousin doesn’t think that any of that will affect her seed. I believe that not only will her son find himself questioning a lot of things growing up; his mother will have some explaining to do that she seems unprepared for. Instead my cuz-o is willing to let free love imprison the only person that matters on this Earth.

Her son.

Music comes naturally to the beautifully talented Stephanie Martinez. Hailing from a melodic family, the talent was a natural gift for the rising star in the independent music scene. Since the tender age of seven Ms. Martinez’s passion for pleasing audience with her rich and sultry voice drew comparisons to fellow child stars gone super like Christina Aguilera and Alicia Keys. With her buzz quickly growing and a single, “So Sick,” currently on iTunes — this week’s VIRGINIA SLIM is one to keep an eye and ear out for. The mesmerizing Stephanie Martinez talks about her first singing performance, how she was mistaken for Kim Kardashian, and reminiscences on how she lost her video game virginity to a brute named Donkey Kong. Enjoy!

DLYDJ: What was your first singing performance like? Can you explain the experience and the trials and tribulations that came with trying to create your own career?

SM: Outside of talent shows my first real performance was strangely enough one where I had to open up for Jeremih. That night was almost surreal and magical! My immediate family and friends were able to attend and support the event. My label went out of their way to make sure that I did not look like a new artist. Most importantly — the response from the crowd at the venue was full of love and it was a pleasure to behold! The road in getting to that point left me aware that it was a grounded learning experience. Along the journey I met various people who gave me the tried-and-true way of doing a song and dance about what they could do for me and my career. But despite all of whom may have just been all talk to those who didn’t believe — everything that I had to go through I still respect the adventure because it made me want to work harder with every step.

DLYDJ: Share your thoughts on today’s music industry. Do you feel that the independent artist has gained the upper-hand against the machine thanks to the Internet?

SM: The Internet has opened up alternative ways for artists like myself to connect to potential fans globally, and in that sense, I believe that we’ve gained the upper-hand. Before you had recording artists that had to solely depend on major labels for burn. Available avenues like social networking, Facebook, Twitter, and the increased communication cell phones provide, we’re able to build relationships and grow our local fan base. Don’t get me wrong — we still have to aspire to have the backing of a major — but at least now we’re able to sell records, connect with our fans, and tour the country until we get that huge deal!

DLYDJ: While out on the road touring or performing — can you share any funny stories about your travels?

SM: [Laughs] There was this time when we went down to Atlanta to show love to DJ Infamous for his fifth year anniversary for being on V103. It was a great party by the way! As I was leaving I noticed people just yelling out for Kim Kardashian and I was thinking, “Wow, Kim was at this party the whole time and I didn’t even see her! I’m a huge fan of hers!” My label mate who was also with me says, “Yo, they yellin’ at YOU!” Now I think Kim Kardashian is a beautiful woman but I don’t think we look alike! I guess apparently they did! From that point on they wouldn’t let me leave. That was the best case of mistaken identity ever! Deep down I really think they knew that I wasn’t Kim Kardashian — but again — I don’t mind!

DLYDJ: Through all these identity issues has anyone ever mistaken you for a gamer by any chance? If so, when did you lose your video game virginity?

SM: [Laughs] Actually I lost my video game virginity at quite the young age. I fell in love with a plumber named Mario, a brute of a monkey named Donkey Kong, and together I got a chance to drive their whips in ‘Super Mario Karts‘. Eventually I left Nintendo for Sony and got into PlayStation when it first came out and I started a relationship with ‘Crash Bandicoot‘ and ‘Star Fox‘. I’m an adventurous woman [laughs]. Now, I’m all into ‘Call of Duty‘ and play it from time to time. So if anyone were to mistake me for a gamer they’d be right in their assessment because it’s definitely not a mistake — I love video games.

DLYDJ: This BP oil situation is a heart-breaking story on so many levels. Can you share your thoughts about the scenario and give your take on how you would rectify this serious issue?

SM: This story hits close to home because of the damage that it has caused everyone on both sides of the fence. One of the things that I would hope the folks in charge would try to change is our reliance on the oil companies to manage the response for these major spills. Changing our energy policies are a must! We know that folks make tons of money when they’ve obtained oil, but the drilling in parts of the world, both above and below sea level, makes a spill a realistic inevitability. This is one of the biggest issues that if I had the ability to change — I would. The governments of the world should be the first to immediately determine the level of the spill and act swiftly if this situation is to arise again and they should just order the abolishing of the oil companies in favor of greener energy. I don’t know if the American public has the patience to let the people responsible for what’s going on come up with a plan of action. I’ve come to realize that there are some things that the government just doesn’t want to solve — such as immigration. Is there a solution? I’m pretty sure there is but it’s one of those things that is used to pacify the people. I think that solving the problem of another potential oil spill is one of those hot ticket issues that can’t wait till a November ballot box.

DLYDJ: Celebreality has really made itself known over the past few years on television and the Internet. Can you share your thoughts on “Generation Me” and where do you see your music fitting into this real-time industry we’re in?

SM: I love music and I love this question. It seems like there is a reality show being shot on every corner, honestly. Of course that gives me more opportunities to have my music placed to appear online and on TV, but the only thing about those reality shows, are that they’re usually showcasing something negative. Everybody these days really love drama — but where’s the balance?

DLYDJ: Speaking of the Internet — with it being able to grant access to you and yours 24/7 to millions of people — what sets you apart from your contemporaries?

SM: Right now I’m more similar to my fan base. I’m still a student in school, I’m young, so I pop up at the same type of events that my fans would attend. The ones that are in South Florida, at least [laughs]. Not only do they connect with me online, but they are liable to run into me anywhere on the street! I’m really like the girl next door, but I just so happen to be an entertainer. You’re not going to find my contemporaries, even on the independent level, so much in the mix like I am and I don’t knock those who don’t — this just so happens to be the thing that’s working for me.

Clark Kent says: Wanna know more about Stephanie Martinez? If you didn’t get a chance to go, click the jump to find out what you missed!

Three days of awesomeness. Three ways that I could go about experiencing it. Unfortunately I didn’t have my costume so it ended up being only two ways that I could enjoy the 2010 NY Comic-Con event. 1) I could go as myself or 2) I could go as your favorite writer’s favorite gamer, Clark Kent, and wreck shop! With a whole weekend of wackiness at my disposal I decided it best to throw caution to the wind and live it up as the Recessionist’s Champion!

Day One:

There’s nothing like seeing thousands of fellow fanboys and girls coming out to support the things they hold dear. Any and every comic genre known to man is present with stars hidden amongst the crowd turned New York City’s Jacob Javitz Center in a nerd’s version of Freaknik — and I was excited to be there. Michael Jackson: The Experience was my first stop after picking up my badge. The game, out on November 23rd for the Xbox, PS3, and Wii, already had a pack crowd in front of the stage. Demoing only four songs (“Workin’ Day & Night,” “Beat It,” “Billie Jean,” and “Smooth Criminal”) — I would’ve been a fool if I didn’t get up there and show off my skills. Walking around the floor a crowd swarmed a seven-foot-tall Chewbacca who immediately upon being rushed with cameras in his space age grill — choked out someone. [Laughs] It was all in good fun but still, you haven’t lived until you seen someone put their giant mitts around a geek’s neck.

See a video performance below:

The first panel I went to was Image Comics — home to The Walking Dead and Invincible — Robert Kirkman had the audience eating out of the palm of his hands. The creator behind both the aforementioned comics spoke upon the artist’s influence on the look of the comic, his love of writing, and how it is a simplified process when you talk to an artist — were just some food for thought that I took away while listening. It was cool to finally meet the mind behind the zombie saga in person and definitely was excited to learn how down to Earth and funny he is. Eventually I moved on to the “Be True To Your Peter Parker” panel which was honestly quite a bore. Analyzing Spider-Man’s true self using psycho-babble and common themes used in superhero storytelling just didn’t work for me. I skated as soon as it came time to get ready for the night’s most anticipated panel.

Robot Chicken creators and execs were in the house to preview their fourth and first quarter stuff to a highly excited audience. Honestly there had to be about 5,000 people just waiting in line. People couldn’t wait to get a chance to talk with Seth Green and Matthew Senreich. Got an extra treat with Macaulay Culkin joining to just hang out with the fellas. Over the course of an hour the gang showed clips from their upcoming Christmas special (out on December 12th), their hour-long third Star Wars special, and a bunch of clips from their fifth season (starts on January 9th, 2011). Culkin will reprise his Home Alone role for the Christmas special, which will also cover the rivalry between Santa and Coca-Cola, his race with Superman, and making sure we never laugh the same again.

Funniest part of the night amidst all the clips was when Seth told the story of how Stevie Wonder’s handlers sent a letter expressing disdain towards a sketch Robot Chicken had done. Hilariously, Seth immediately quipped, after praising the musical genius, “I’m sure that nobody show it to him.”

And so ended the first night of Comic-Con.

Day Two:

The second day of NY Comic-Con was a video game inspired day. I had planned on checking out Dead Space 2, the new online Final Fantasy game, but was pleased as punch to be treated to some great surprises.

First was to see what Marvel had up their sleeve as they unveiled a new character for Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Even though images had leaked the night before, the crowd responded excitedly for the unveiling of Modok. The most complimented and talked about character from all the panelists was Deadpool. Even though where I was sitting at dissenters miffed about bringing old characters for such a lauded game like Marvel vs. Capcom 3 back made them feel like they, as gamers, were being short-changed. I personally couldn’t wait to put on a tournament with the homie Fresh Daily this year!

The other ooh n’ ahh moment came when they previewed the new Captain America: Super Soldier game. Cap will have to fight many henchman and a few of his most notorious foes as he tries to stop Red Skull and a mysterious, as-yet-to-be-mentioned baddie, from taking over the world. Iron Cross and Arnim Zola will also appear in the game. Christos Gage, who wrote the game’s story, was present, and seemed excited at the prospect of bringing this movie-inspired version to the masses.

X-Men: Destiny also wowed people. The vague trailer announced the partnership between Marvel and Activision. I do believe that folks will wait to see more before jumping on board. Konami got a better reaction when the panel let loose that the arcade version of X-Men will be re-released and be beamed straight to your home consoles via Xbox Live and the Playstation Network. After a quick lunch and a few hours spent walking around and running into Corey Feldman of all people, I attended an early screening of The Secret Origin of DC Comics narrated by Ryan Reynolds — and you’ll have to wait till the review goes live to find out what I thought about the flick. I had some downtime so I met up with Sunflex USA/Snakebyte’s own dynamic duo, Bruce Borenstein and Mitch Perliss. Bruce, whose brother will be a featured interview on the site, has that outgoing personality that is sure to either get you in or out of… trouble. Sitting behind a registration desk folks kept coming up to us as if we worked there and Bruce handled it like a pro. I learned quickly that the first rule of business is to be a master of improv.

Day Two ended on a euphoric high as there was a costumed dance contest involving Gohan, Dante [from Devil May Cry], a ton of Naruto characters, some original concepts, and in the end — a good time for all involved. Gohan served everyone with his break-dancing performance and delivered a Kamehameha to his competition. A Vegeta-like challenger rose to try and stop Gohan from winning, but Gohan went Super Saiyan Level 2 with a double-handed spin. The crowd went nuts. I simply wished that I had it on video to show you all!

The night ended with a very happy and energetic Warren Spector talking about and showing off Disney Epic Mickey to a packed room full of eager Mouseketeers. An iPhone/iPad app will be coming out to tease gamers in the next few days mused the video gaming legend. He also noted that there will be a plethora of hidden treasures littered throughout the game and in order to get everything it’ll take three full plays of the game to complete it 100%. Bragging without being cocky, Spector quipped that Disney Epic Mickey has “the best music that’s ever been in a video game — period” — the jury is still out on that one though.

Got a chance to meet the guy and you’ve heard it here first that there will be an exclusive Warren Spector interview on Don’t Lose Your Day Job soon!

Clark Kent says: For Part 2 of the Comic-Con adventure — click HERE! Are you ready to go to war? Click the jump to get it poppin’…

I think I realized that love was all a game at 19. Granted being that old wasn’t too long ago, but still it was one of my greatest revelations that I ever discovered.

Love really is a battlefield. You experience the push and pull of amore, both parties trying to one-up the other, all the while wondering what the opponent is thinking, and plotting their next move is the end result.

Now, don’t get me wrong — I enjoy a great game of Taboo — I even dabble in Monopoly. But dating has to be the most complicated game of them all. There are no rules when it comes to matter of the heart. Matter of fact, you never truly win in the end. There’s no pinning ceremony or shiny trophy presented after your wedding day. Honestly happiness is quite anti-climatic.

Generally us human beings are all a bit reserved, not anxious to let our guards down, but once the feelings are out — we then have to make sure the mind is in accordance with the heart — the physical is a whole different story. Sometimes when we contemplate about the complexities of love, I think back to my parents. Years before the distrust and divorce, there was a genuine love between the two. There were moments of sheer content and joy in being with one another, but there always seemed to be an inkling of unbalance in their union as well.

There were times where it seemed like they needed to one-up each other, the condition I mentioned before. Trite arguments that should have quickly been settled and resolved, often escalated by one comment sparking another harsher comment. Neither one would concede defeat, no one would let their guard down fully, and it became increasingly stifling to see that they’d never fully release personal gain over the other person.

Was it selfishness? Maybe.

But as I’ve gotten older and watched a beautiful and rare marriage of decades minify, I found a grain of sense.

True love is a release. Like birthing a child or breathing air out, it’s something we can’t control or manipulate. It requires losing battles and gaining peace in another’s contentment. It’s not a battle but, gratification in gaining a comrade. A war of the roses fought using love as the ultimate weapon.

Ladies — What are some military minded tactics you use to keep love from turning into World War IV? Share your thoughts in the comments section below!
