Clark Kent says: Can you recall the last Denzel Washington movie you watched? I didn’t see ‘The Taking of Pelham 123′ — only because I wanted to see the original first. But the Brooklynite comes for the jugular in his new movie… is it a knock-out though? Find out after the jump.

GOOD: The Hughes Brothers (‘Menace II Society,’ ‘From Hell’) take their turn at the post-apocalyptic film genre. Another notch on their interesting filmography, ‘The Book of Eli’ finds Denzel Washington back in the action-adventure genre as he play (you guessed it) Eli. Equipped with a shotgun and a blade that would make Rambo jealous, Eli is badass and all business. He’s willing to do everything to protect this mysterious book. Washington kicks ass in ‘The Book of Eli,’ while the story doesn’t suffer under the great thespians acting talents. Gary Whitta gives an interesting look at “life after the end of the world” that is sure to give audiences something to think about after seeing ‘Eli’.

BAD: The film could’ve used more action scenes featuring Denzel using his skills to combat evil. Washington’s ‘Eli’ is also the most original character in a film full of cookie cutter characters. Gary Oldman seems like a typical post-apocalypse/western baddie and Mila Kunis doesn’t add too much extra preseveratives to ‘The Book of Eli’s’ story. There are quite of few inconsistencies that will leave audiences scratching their head once they finish watching this flick.

UGLY: While this may not put Denzel into the Oscar nominated category, ‘Book of Eli’ has a few strong shining moments that outshine the bad. The Hughes Brothers brand of violence may have gone over the top, but Gary Whitta’s story that drives Washington’s character is one that will have people coming up with answers to “What if…?” theories. Audiences would’ve appreciated seeing Denzel’s ‘Eli’ character in the mix, fighting it out with the baddies, and more explosions.

Clark Kent says: In short, ‘The Book of Eli’ is worth it if you’re an avid theater rat. Denzel and company offer a story that will have you talking at the end… no matter how you feel about it as a work of art. If you haven’t seen this movie, yet, here’s what you’re missing below:
